On August 16, 2007, Ambassador Foley visited students and teachers at the “Teaching Tolerance through English” summer camp in Balatonlelle, Hungary. The camp brings together 70 students, ages 12-14, plus 14 teachers from Croatia, Hungary, Kosovo, Montenegro, Romania, and Serbia for two weeks of activities that promote inter-ethnic understanding and empathy using English as the language of instruction. U.S. Embassies in Serbia, Romania, Montenegro, and Croatia, and U.S. Office Pristina all contributed funds to make this camp a success.
The camp directors confirmed to Ambassador Foley that Kosovar and Serbian students overcame initial suspicion and initiated friendships that look like they will endure beyond the conclusion of the camp. All the students expressed excitement about follow-up exchange visits to take place over the next several months.
