Robert Olen Butler in Budapest

Pulitzer Prize-winning author Robert Olen Butler conducted a three-part program in Budapest on December 14, 2006. His interview with MTV-2 for “Kultúrház” focused on his work as a television and movie script writer. Following this, his lecture on creative writing to over 50 English students at Károli Gáspár University was so well-received that his hosts asked him to remain for the English Department’s Christmas party so that he could continue to answer questions in this informal atmosphere.

At Central European University, Mr. Butler explained his formula for successful writing that remains true an author’s inspiration. He gave insight into his teaching methods and explained what problems “artists of words” have to face when trying to evoke their creativity. His inspiring speaking style motivated a lively discussion with students from all over Europe and the United States working on writing projects for their master’s or doctoral degrees.
