Celebrating Diversity: Photo Exhibit of Native Americans
On May 28, 2008, Ambassador Foley opened "Sacred Legacy," a photographic exhibit of North American Indians and their traditional culture. The exhibition pays homage to American photographer and ethnographer Edward S. Curtis, whose museum-quality prints from the early 1900’s illustrate the broad diversity of North American tribes.
In her opening remarks, Ambassador Foley emphasized the importance of recognizing the contributions of all American minorities to the enrichment of U.S. society. "We have learned that tolerance of differences and respect for the traditions of all our citizens makes us a stronger country. This pluralism is a characteristic of all democracies, which I know all of us here tonight cherish and continue to defend vigilantly."
Over 200 people attended the opening which included Native American music performed on traditional instruments by Péter Szatmári. The exhibition will be open until July 10 in the Millenáris Red and Black Gallery (Budapest II, Fény u. 20-22). On June 7 there will be a full-day program organized for children on the arts, crafts, and stories of North American Indians.
