Deputy Chief of Mission Jeffrey Levine presented the "American Bookshelf," a collection of recent books on American society, government and culture, to the American Studies Department of Eszterházy College in Eger on April 7, 2008. The Public Affairs Section chose and purchased the "American Bookshelf" to donate it to American Studies Departments of major colleges and universities around the country.
The donation ceremony took place in the local American Corner and was followed by a presentation on the U.S. elections. Mr. Levine provided background information on the key players of the election campaign and outlined various scenarios for the candidates in the race. The audience of about fifty students and faculty asked questions on a wide range of topics, e.g.: what happens to the campaign money if one is not elected to be a presidential candidate, would the presidency of Barack Obama mean the surge of a reverse segregation movement by blacks, does openness work as a campaign tool, etc.?
Earlier in the day, Mr. Levine met with Rector Zoltán Hauser, Vice Rector Mihály Mózes and András Tarnóc, the Head of the American Studies and International Relations Departments. The Rector expressed his appreciation for the Embassy’s support of the American Corner and requested the Embassy’s assistance with their new M.A. program in American Studies to be launched in 2009.
