On April 22, 2008, Ambassador Foley presented awards to the winners of the Embassy’s Earth Day Poster Contest. Organized by the Public Affairs Section, the contest received submissions from 50 students who attend one of 30 Hungarian high schools that utilize the GLOBE curriculum. Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment – a program developed by the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and now in use all over the world – encourages a hands-on approach to environmental protection for teens.
Winners in the 14-15 age group and the 16-18 chose one of two themes: “What is most to preserve in our Environment?” or “How do we reduce our carbon footprint?” The 50 students, teachers, and family who attended the award ceremony also heard from State Department environment speaker Catherine Witherspoon about how to save energy by killing "vampire" appliances.
