On January 20th, 2009, the U.S. Embassy hosted a reception to celebrate the inauguration of the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama. An enthusiastic group of about 150 Hungarians and Americans gathered to witness the swearing in of the new U.S. President and to hear his inaugural address.

Ambassador April Foley welcomed the audience consisting of members of Parliament, university rectors, professors and students, NGO representatives, and much of the Hungarian media. Ambassador Foley introduced the theme of the inauguration, "a new birth of freedom," recalling the memorable words of President Lincoln's Gettysburg Address.
