On February 16, 2011, close to 40 Hungarian civil society organizations participated in an interactive discussion via live video link to the State Department in Washington, D.C. Secretary Clinton and other State Department leaders discussed civil society’s role in empowering women, bolstering democracy and human rights, and promoting good governance and accountability. This event utilized text chatting and polling technology.  During the program, Secretary Clinton’s Senior Advisor on Civil Society and Emerging Democracies, Tomicah Tillemann, addressed many questions submitted by participants around the world, including from Budapest.

Secretary Clinton’s Strategic Dialogue with Civil Society will take place over the next 18 months, and is designed to elevate the importance of U.S. cooperation with members of civil society and underscore U.S. commitment to protect and defend civil society around the world.
