U.S. Special Envoy for Guantanamo Consults with Hungarian Government Officials and Party Representatives

On June 18, 2009, senior U.S. diplomat, Special Envoy for Guantanamo Daniel Fried visited Budapest to follow up on earlier U.S.-Hungarian discussions concerning the closing of the Guantanamo detention facility. Since the Hungarian government expressed willingness to consider a U.S. request to receive a small number of former inmates who were no longer considered security risks, Ambassador Fried met with Foreign Ministry officials and representatives of the parliamentary parties to continue the consultations.

During a meeting with the Hungarian media, he stressed the friendly and voluntary nature of the exchange and noted that concrete issues were discussed with the Hungarian government and that the consultations would continue over the next few weeks. He also added that the U.S. would provide Hungary with all the details it requires before making its own decision.
