U.S. Embassy Supports an International Conference on Combating Global Corruption
Ambassador Foley joined Hungarian Prosecutor-General Dr. Tamás Kovács and Finnish Ambassador Jari Vilén in opening an international conference on Combating Global Corruption and Money Laundering on September 29, 2008 in Budapest.
The Conference, sponsored by the Office of the Prosecutor General of Hungary and organized with the assistance of the U.S. Department of Justice and the Government of Finland, presents an opportunity for prosecutors from countries in Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia to share tools and best practices in the fight against money laundering and public corruption.
As Ambassador Foley noted, "Money laundering is not a victimless crime: it provides the fuel for terrorists, drug dealers, human traffickers, and other criminals. Similarly, official corruption undermines public trust and robs societies of urgently needed resources for healthcare, education, and economic competitiveness."
