Ambassador’s Climate Change Outreach: Treeplanting in Drégelypalánk
On November 3, 2008, Ambassador Foley planted 14 trees and 30 shrubs with the local community in Drégelypalánk, about 70 km from Budapest, as part of her Climate Change Outreach. The planting site was a grassy overlook from which birdwatchers can view the wildlife in the adjacent wetland of international significance. The new trees and shrubs will enhance the beauty of the site, shade the birdwatchers, and also provide cover for their activities to reduce the disturbance to the local wildlife they are viewing.
About 25 local elementary school children who have been involved with the wetland participated in the treeplanting, as well as local tourism professionals; representatives of BirdLife Hungary, and the Mayors of eight of the ten towns on the “greenway” route for non-motor transport of which the planting site is a part. Ambassador Foley and the Mayor of Drégelypalánk gave remarks to the assembled group, and then jointly planted the first tree, after which the other attendees enthusiastically completed planting of the remaining trees. At the conclusion of the outdoor program, the participants adjourned to the Mayor’s office for a reception co-hosted by the Embassy and the Mayor.
