Ambassador Foley Commemorates Cardinal Mindszenty
On November 4, 2008, Ambassador April Foley received the representatives of the Mindszenty Foundation, the Mindszenty Society, the Alliance of Christian Intellectuals, and the Barankovics István Foundation who came to lay their wreaths at the memorial plaque of Cardinal József Mindszenty placed on the façade of the Chancery.
Cardinal Mindszenty requested refugee status from the U.S. Government when he arrived at the Embassy in Budapest on November 4, fifty-two years ago at the end of the Hungarian uprising against the Soviet Union. The Cardinal stayed in the Embassy for fifteen years.
Following the memorial ceremony, the Ambassador invited the commemorators to visit the rooms in the Embassy where the Cardinal used to live and work.
