U.S. Opera Carries Message of Tolerance at Szeged Premiere

On November 9, 2008, Cultural Attache Carolyn Glassman traveled to the city of Szeged to present the DiCapo Opera Theater with the Ambassador’s Award for Cultural Diplomacy. The New York-based opera company performed the Hungarian premiere of Robert Ward’s "The Crucible" as part of the 1st Annual Szeged Opera Competition, a multinational competition with performances broadcast throughout Europe on Mezzo Television.

In her remarks to a sold-out audience, Ms. Glassman highlighted the present-day significance of the opera’s message of the dangers of intolerance and hatred, and acknowledged the positive benefits of music in bringing about greater understanding and strengthening of cultural bonds between the U.S. and Hungary.
