Development and Progress in Afghanistan
The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Officer currently in Baghlan, Afghanistan, Angelina Allen-Mpyisi, and U.S. Embassy Budapest Officer, Richard Jao, who worked in Kabul, Afghanistan for the first half of 2008 spoke about Afghanistan's development and progress in Pécs and Eger organized by the American Corners. They gave presentations at the University of Pécs Political Science Department, Béla II Training High School, and to professionals including current and retired NATO-affiliated military officers, and high school students in Eger.
Ms. Allen-Mpyisi has been working alongside the Hungarian Provincial Reconstruction Team for the last eight months and will return to continue her work in Afghanistan for another two years. She spoke about the work she has done with local Afghan community leaders to meet their needs in the building of wells, schools, bridges, District Communication Centers, and vocational training programs to provide the Afghan people in Baghlan with skills to earn a livable wage. Through the Local Governance and Community Development program, Ms. Allen-Mpyisi has also worked with the provincial and district governments to increase their reach to the Afghan people and their capacity to address their needs. Conflict mediation among tribes and resolving disagreements between peoples has also been a part of the assistance her office provides, as well providing technical assistance to leaders on issues of sustainable development, such as agriculture and the economy. Mr. Jao talked about his work in the capital Kabul and the different problems of a large developing urban center.
