Ambassador Foley's Outreach to Győr in North-western Hungary
On December 16, 2008, Ambassador April Foley made a trip to Győr in north-western Hungary. This is part of her public diplomacy effort to reach out to towns and cities outside of Budapest.
While in Győr, the Ambassador visited the Széchenyi University campus. She met with the Deputy Rector, János Rechnitzer, and received an overview of the university. She then addressed a large group of students and spoke about the U.S. elections, the Visa Waiver Program and U.S.-Hungarian relations. Before taking questions from the students, the Ambassador made a strong plea for tolerance be it of racial, ethnic, religious or orientational differences.
During her time in Győr, Ambassador Foley had lunch with the Deputy Mayor of the city, Rudolf Ottófi, and they discussed the need for close coordination between the university, the municipality and local businesses in steering young people into productive and rewarding careers. Before departing Győr, the Ambassador held a press roundtable with several local papers and television.
