Opening of Halmajugra's First Tanoda Sport Club
On September 30, 2007, Political Officer Suzanne McGuire traveled to the town of Halmajugra to celebrate the sport club opening in the town's first tanoda. The tanoda, a center offering after school care and tutoring, was opened a few months ago, and it has already achieved great success. Mrs. McGuire was greeted by Mr. Alajos Lakatos and Mr. Zsolt Lakatos from the Roma Self-Government, as well as the mayor from the town. Remarks were given by Mrs. McGuire and the town leaders, as well as State Secretary Edit Rauh.
The children from the tanoda presented examples of some of their after school activities through dance; poem recitation in English, German and Hungarian; and music, beginning with the U.S. National Anthem: The Star Spangled Banner. Following the presentation was a ribbon cutting ceremony by the State Secretary and the head of the Roma integration department of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor.
The tanoda was made possible through the collaboration between the Roma Self-Government and the local government of Halmajugra.
