Entering their 82nd year of touring, the Harlem Globetrotters continue to thrill audiences around the world. As part of their European tour, Harlem Globetrotters came to Hungary to mesmerize basketball fans in the capital’s largest sports arena on February 28, 2008. Although it was not their first visit to Hungary, the captivated audience was nevertheless spellbound by the bag of tricks the Globetrotters threw at them during their two-hour show.

The Embassy arranged for a meet and greet and a photo op with the players before the game started. At half time, Public Affairs Officer Michael Hurley presented the team with the Ambassador’s Award for Sports Diplomacy in front of an audience of 9,000 people who cheered in support of the team when they were given the award.

The Ambassador’s Award was created by Ambassador April H. Foley in 2007. It is designed to honor those individuals and groups whose outstanding work in the fields of culture and sports advance the Embassy’s goals of mutual understanding and the deepening of friendship between the United States and Hungary.
