Karen Hughes, Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs, Visits Hungary

Under Secretary Karen Hughes became the first presenter in Public Affairs Budapest's Strategic Speaker Series.  Her speech "The Trans-Atlantic Agenda: Common Values, Common Concerns" drew a standing room only audience to the Central European University on October 1, 2007.

In introducing the Under Secretary, Ambassador Foley highlighted the importance of the "Diplomacy of Deeds" and explained how the concerns of average citizens played in the Under Secretary's diplomatic work.  The speech, and the ensuing question and answer period, as well as her interviews with Hungarian journalists at the event helped to convey the U.S. government's continued interest in the region and the mutual benefits of trans-Atlantic partnership.

During her September 29-October 1 visit to Hungary, Under Secretary Hughes also addressed the American Chamber of Commerce on corporate social responsibility and taped an interview for an October 3 broadcast with Hungary's top-rated morning show "Napkelte" (Sunrise).  For her other activities while in Budapest, please see below.
