American Corners Celebrate International Education Week around Hungary
To celebrate the importance of international education, the Clinton administration declared the third week of November each year as International Education Week (IEW). During this one-week festivity, educational professionals and international students get together all over the world to emphasize the importance of education.
The three American Corners (ACs) in Pécs, Veszprém and Debrecen engaged in various program activities related to IEW November 12-16, 2007. The AC in Pécs invited presenters to provide information on Camp Counselor summer jobs in the USA. It organized a round-table discussion where participants shared their educational and work experience abroad. Representatives of the Fulbright Program, Education USA, Alliance Françoise and the Finnish Cultural Center participated in the discussion, among others. The AC also offered two sessions on undergraduate study opportunities in the U.S. to the students of Gandhi High, a Roma school.
The American Corner in Veszprém invited officials from Youth for Understanding (YFU), a non-profit educational organization dedicated to promoting international understanding through exchange programs for high school students. The Corner devoted one of its English Conversation Club sessions to a discussion comparing educational systems in the U.S. and Hungary.
The AC in Debrecen held a series of programs conducted by the Fulbright Education USA Advising Center. Participants learned about the TOEFL exam, its structure, the scores, preparation strategies and the registration process. They also did a mock-test on the computers and were also advised on scholarship opportunities. A volunteer talked about the YFU program followed by two former participants who shared their experiences about living and studying abroad. The event was concluded with an informal conversation about what difficulties one has to cope with when one decides to study in a foreign country.
