Non-Immigrant Visas

Interview Day Details

On the day of the visa interview applicants are required to submit several items to the consular officer including the application and supplemental forms (if required), a photograph, and the $131 visa processing fee receipt. Information about these items can be found on the Application Procedures page.

In addition, applicants must provide the following at the time of the interview:

  1. Passport, valid for at least 6 months longer than the intended period of stay in the United States. For Hungarian citizens the passport must be valid for at least the intended period of stay in the United States. The passport must have at least one empty visa page. Please also present any previous passports you may have.

  2. Proof of strong social, economic and/or family ties to the country where the applicant intends to return. U.S. immigration law states that every applicant for a non-immigrant visa shall be presumed to be an intending immigrant, unless the consular officer is satisfied that the applicant 1) intends a temporary stay, and 2) possesses a residence outside the United States that he or she does not intend to abandon.

Applicants may choose how to best prove sufficient ties to their country of residence and should be prepared to answer related questions from the consular officer. Applicants are welcome to submit additional documentation which may serve as further proof of these strong ties.

Because there is no longer a requirement to submit documents, applicants should not contact the visa information line or the Consular Section to ask what documents they should present during the interview.

  3. Proof of purpose of travel. Applicants should be able to clearly explain to the consular their reasons to travel to the United States and provide evidence that the travel has been planned in advance. Applicants are encouraged to submit a letter from the inviting party when applicable.

Additional Information

Arrival at the Embassy:

For security reasons, applicants should arrive no more than 15 minutes before their scheduled interview time.

Because the waiting room is small, we normally allow applicants only to enter the area. In exceptional circumstances, a family member or an attorney may accompany the applicant during the interview if prior permission is received from the Consular Section.

Fingerprint Scan:

During the visa interview, the consular officer will electronically scan the ten fingers of every applicant between the ages of 14 and 79 in order to enhance the security of the applicant's visa. Please visit our Fingerprint Scan page for more information.

Visa Delivery:

All applicants approved for a visa will receive their passports through a courier service arranged by the embassy approximately 2-3 days after the interview. The courier service fee is 1,605 HUF and is payable at the time the passport is delivered.

Applicants will be asked to fill out the required courier paperwork at the time of the visa interview. Instructions for filling out the courier paperwork can be found on our Courier Service page (pdf). Individuals are urged to choose a delivery address where they will be for up to three days after the visa interview.
