On January 7, 2008, Central European University (CEU) and Public Affairs of the U.S. Embassy organized a public lecture for the Hungarian-American writer Katalin Marton who is visiting Hungary on the occasion of the launching of the Hungarian translation of her bestselling work "The Great Escape: Nine Hungarians Who Escaped Hitler and Changed the World."
Ms. Marton shared insights from her work which traces the lives of nine extraordinary Hungarian Jews whose talents and influence reached full expression outside of their homeland. She regaled her audience with stories about these fascinating men whose roots in Hungary contributed to their monumental talent. She undertook this work in order to acquaint Americans with the scientific and artistic achievements of her native Hungary and thereby bring about greater understanding between Hungarians and Americans. During the reception that followed her presentation, Ms. Marton autographed many copies of her new book.
