On July 8, 2008 Ambassador April Foley and the Hungarian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Márta Fekszi, signed the "Agreement Concerning Cooperation in the Area of Countering the Proliferation of Nuclear Materials and Technologies." This agreement will allow the removal of highly enriched uranium, conversion of the Budapest research reactor from highly enriched uranium to low enriched uranium fuel, and security enhancement of the research reactor site and nuclear materials stored at the site.
Speaking of the Agreement, Ambassador Foley said that it is "an example of the international community working collectively to reduce the threat of nuclear terrorism, and is the kind of concrete international security action that increases both U.S. security and that of our allies."
