Ohio National Guard to Work with Hungarians in Afghanistan
Representatives from the Ohio National Guard (OHNG), Hungary, and the Netherlands met on May 7, 2008 to discuss the future deployment of a combined Hungary and OHNG Operational Mentor and Liaison Team (OMLT) in a Dutch led Afghan brigade. The conference met to exchange information on the area in which the OMLT will operate, the new Afghan unit it will train, and administrative and logistics support. The combined Hungary and OHNG OMLT will be led by a Hungarian officer. The combined unit will train in Hungary and Germany during the Fall and Winter of 2008 and 2009. It will deploy to Afghanistan in 2009.
The OMLTs mentor and train Afghan military units to eventually operate independently and without NATO and U.S. assistance. OMLTs are approximately 30 – 50 soldiers. The Afghan battalion has about 300 soldiers.
