Michael J. Hurley, Public Affairs Officer

The Public Affairs Section (formerly known as U.S. Information Service or USIS) conducts educational and cultural exchanges and press and information activities.

The Cultural Affairs Office supervises U.S. academic exchange programs, including Fulbright, and Humphrey Fellowships. We also arrange short-term professional visits to the U.S. in selected fields, under the International and Voluntary Visitor Program. Other programs include providing student advising services and computer-based testing through the Fulbright Commission, arranging lecturers on foreign policy and security topics, supporting civic education and democracy building projects, and encouraging partnerships between U.S. and Hungarian cultural organizations.

The Press and Information Office answers daily media inquiries and issues press releases, distributes the "Washington File" electronically, conducts non-academic exchange programs for journalists, arranges media training in the U.S. for working professionals, and supports the media needs of high-level U.S. Government visitors, trade missions, and official delegations.

Our electronic reference service, the Information Resource Center, answers inquiries about U.S. policy, as well as about politics, economics, society, and culture.

The Regional English Language Office (RELO) promotes the development of an English competent cadre of professionals and government officials who can participate directly in dialogues with their U.S. counterparts. The RELO assists the English teaching community in the host country to develop the language competency of the professionals and the successor generation.
