The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (PSO) performed a program of Beethoven and Brahms to a full house at the Bartók Béla Concert Hall on February 4, 2008.
Ambassador Foley introduced the PSO as one of America's premier classical music ensembles not only for its virtuosity, but for helping to train high school musicians interested in a career in music and for offering music appreciation courses to make the genre more accessible to the general public. Bringing together Americans and Hungarians in the enjoyment of great music is one way we build on the ties of friendship that unite our two democracies. To recognize this, Ambassador Foley also presented the PSO with the Ambassador's Award for Music Diplomacy. This prestigious award is granted only to those artists and groups that demonstrate excellence in their field and contribute to the strong bilateral relations America and Hungary enjoy. The audience on February 4 also judged the Orchestra performance to be of high quality. Sustained applause required two encores.
