Embassy Officer Lays Wreath to Commemorate Roma Holocaust
On August 1, 2006 the U.S. Embassy paid tribute to the 62nd anniversary of the Roma Holocaust by laying a wreath at the memorial plaque of the victims of the Roma Holocaust, as part of a commemoration event organized by the National Roma Self-Government.
The Congress of the Roma World Association declared August 2 Roma Holocaust Day. On August 2, 1944 more than three thousand Roma were killed at the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, a tragic event that has been commemorated in many countries of the world.
Representatives of the Roma-Self Government, representatives of the parties of the Hungarian Parliament and representatives of other Embassies also commemorated the Roma victims. In the name of the Hungarian Republic, Undersecretary Gabor Csizmar said, “our task is not only to remember but to make others remember what hatred and discrimination can lead to.” Orban Kolompar, President of the National Roma Self-Government urged alliance and solidarity as the only way to prevent such a tragedy from ever happening again.
