One of the U.S. Embassy's goals is to assist Hungarian government programs that help minorities and women reach their full potential as citizens of a democratic country. It is part of what embassies do all over the world under the State Department's programs collectively known as "diplomacy of deeds."
In Hungary, the Embassy is pleased to support the acquisition and development of professional skills among Roma citizens through the U.S. International Visitor Program, through Embassy-funded summer youth camps, and other public diplomacy activities. As another example of her own concern for Roma development, Ambassador Foley was pleased to attend the official opening of the new headquarters of the Roma Self-Government of Budapest (FCÖ) on April 22, 2008.
At the event, the Ambassador made reference to the Embassy donation of office furniture and equipment to help outfit the headquarters. In her remarks, the Ambassador hoped that the renewal of the Self-Government building would also bring renewed efforts to help Roma citizens become better integrated into the civic society of Hungary. In this way, Roma would enjoy the full benefits of a modern democracy. She congratulated Mayor Demszky, Roma Self-Government President István Makai, and all those whose work helped bring the project to fruition.
