The United States and Hungary worked jointly to provide military aircraft and infrastructure for the air policing mission Operation Noble Endeavor, in conjunction with the NATO Summit in Bucharest. The summit, held from April 2 to April 4, 2008, hosted leaders from NATO member nations.

U.S. Air Force KC-135R Stratotankers temporarily based at Budapest’s Ferihegy International Airport provided air refueling support to combat air patrols over the summit location, while Hungarians provided air traffic control and airspace management expertise to support the air policing mission. This support mission operated from March 31 to April 6.

U.S.-Hungarian cooperation under the NATO framework to augment collective security for the summit demonstrates the continued strengthening of the NATO alliance. Colonel Peter Davidson, Commander of the 323rd Air Expeditionary Wing which operates the KC-135s commented that: “This is just one example in a long list of accomplishments of NATO nations working together toward a common purpose. There is great strength in allied interoperability, and I’m proud to be a part of this mission.”
