On March 26, 2008, the Embassy Public Affairs Section arranged for a digital video conference between the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Kurt Volker and representatives of the Hungarian media as preparation for the upcoming NATO Summit in Bucharest.
Mr. Volker initiated his remarks in fluent Hungarian, thus winning over the usually difficult to please journalists. After laying out the Summit scenario and the U.S. position on a number of key Summit issues, he fielded a wide range of questions dealing with NATO expansion, Kosovo, energy independence and missile defense. With the NATO Summit taking place right next door, the reporters were eager to get the official U.S. policy directly from a key Department official.
